Google module: Personalized Home

Here is the latest version of my google module: Personalized Home.
This module is aimed at modifying the look of google personalized homepage.
You can change columns spacing, text padding, link color, link style, title font color and title bar color..

screenshot

module :
http://membres.lycos.fr/kyrlian/personalizedhome.xml
You'll need to set it as "Inlined" using the developer module (see below).

I tested the module on Firefox 1.5 and opera, with windowsXP.

Inlining:
As my module modifies the page style, you'll need to set it as Inlined.
To enable inling you must have the developper module installed.
To add it, just type "developer.xml" in the "Create Section" box.
This module will list all the modules you have, with a 'Inlined' and a 'Cached' chekbox.
You can check both for "Personalized Home".
More info about inling

Update
Due to numerous user inputs, the module is regularly updated. To force updating of your module, just untick the 'cached' checkbox. Then tick it back to save my bandwith, thanks.

Due to the limit of 10000 characters applied on google base, the google base mirror is discontinued.

But we have a new mirror on GoogleModules.com:

As now you can't change the page background, nor the text color.
I'm working on it.

Ok, v1.1 is published and should fulfill your needs.

I'm using firefox 1.5 and I can't get it to change the title bar text color.

@castironpants: This is weird, it's working on my Fx1.5. Could you have a look at the java console and tell me if there is any error message ?
Also, the most recent version of the module is v1.3.

maybe you can make a menu like

http://www.googlemodules.com/module/75/

@Richard: Hex colors are more flexible but more complex to use... I'll think about it. Ok for the bg picture, keep posted.

@Anonymous: The menu used by cydelic is interesting, but I've read the code and it's far too heavy to use given the number of items I have. Thus I won't do it for now.

About version 1.6, I'm on Firefox 1.5 and I still can't change Title Bar font color and I can no longer view background images.

kyrlian said...

bg image is fixed. About title color, I don't understand why it doesn't work for you: http://membres.lycos.fr/kyrlian/red_title_font.jpg

Is there some way you could give us the option of centered, stretched, or tiled bg image?

Also, while I'm still having trouble with the title bar text, you mentioned something about java. I've been having trouble with some java-related links, but I don't know how to fix it/enter the console.

You can not stretch background images using CSS. There is an alternative method, but I'm not sur it will blen nicely with google ig. However, I'll try it, keep poster.
Also, to display javascript console click tools/javascript console.
Latest messages are at the bottom.

@castironpants:
I tried your parameters, result in white title (see http://membres.lycos.fr/kyrlian/screen29xc_k.jpg)

The javascript error you pointed is due to another script : My Google Menus (which I will update as soon as my DNS stops bugging me). I have it too.

Well, I'll digg that...

v1.7 is out, now you can add your own background image, stretched!
And more...

Hey,
Great module, I love it!
I only have one little problem, because recently the text color in the title box takes on the colors of google/ig, and I can't get the color I put there. Please help.
Thx.

So, I can't add the developer.xml to my google personalized homepage because google seems to have taken away the old 'add content' screen for some new list of stuff. I can't just put 'developer.xml' as a rss feed. Is there any other way to 'inline' the module so I can try it out?

Anonymous said...

Quick bug?
The headers on the modules duplicate as a link, and therefore the color doesn't take. Maybe add a "Header Link Color" to your module?

Also, a hover color for the links might be nice.

alright... i count three people that have complained about no documentation, and no answer from the author. You can't expect the lay person to know the syntax or format that needs to be entered in each field, especially if we don't know if it is using XHTML, or what... some basic information on how to use each field would be wonderful. I am a web designer, but for the life of me, i cannot get the image opacity field to work, what is the format for the field? I have tried entering "0.5" for half opacity, but it makes no change.

Hi Kyrlian,
I'm so sad ... the module doesn't work anymore! I had such a nice pesonalized homepage, and now it's gone! Making me so sad.
The error I get is :

Error parsing module spec:
missing ?xml ... ? header

(with <> on either side of the ?'s)

Can you plz plz plz look at the problem and give me back my nice startpage? It look so empty now.

Please help me. You would make me so happy.

Here is a simple solution to the missing ?xml ... ? header error...

1st... Download the personalizedhome.xml file @
http://www.sendspace.com/file/w7zrux (Thanks Google Cache!)

2nd... Upload the xml file to the web host of your choice. (Most ISP's provide you with free space)

3rd... add the "developer.xml" module to your Google IG page.

4th... Under "Add a module:" enter the address of the XML file you uploaded.

And you are done!
Enjoy your "Personalized" experience.

Note, You will have to "re-create" all of your personalized settings. :-/ (And don't forget to enable "Inlined" as well!)

Hi Jay, thanx for your help, much appreciated !!
There is only one problem: both developer and module manager can't find the personalizedhome.xml file I uploaded to my ISP. Error message is : Module not found.
I can see the file with my browsers though. That's strange.
What am I doing wrong ?

Hi all.
First: use the mirror
http://users.cjb.net/kyrlian/personalizedhome.xml
Second: Title color is fixed.
Third: No doc, please refer to the help link at the bottom of the config. For transparency 0.5 should work - but only applies to stretched and centered image.
Thanks for your interest and support.

damn kyr you saved the day for this module...thnx for finding another host!

Hi Kyrlian,
I love your module, but I think Google did some updating again because my background image doesn't show anymore, and also the title color doesn't work anymore.
Can you plz look into this, so I can have my nice hompage back again?
Thx!
