Hi guys,

I've just started playing with gnome-do.
The google-contacts plugin seems convenient, but it doesn't play well with my settings of ubuntu preferred application - configured for gmail.

I was using a solution found on Xantus blog :

wiimote on linux: wminput

While I'm here, some advertising for a couple of plugins I wrote for wminput, the wiimote driver for linux.

wminput enables to connect a wiimote to your linux pc, and map wiimote actions to mouse and keyboard events.
I wrote plugins to play FPS games with the wiimote... more fun that accurate :)

Typing of the python

I recently played with Python, here is my second game : Typing of the python.
The first game is a snowfight game designed for two players with wiimotes, but the graphics are too bad for publishing yet.

This one is similar to Sega's Typing of The Dead, with no graphics, just type as fast as you can.
I wrote it on linux but it should work on windows.
The zip file includes the python code (totp.py), the sounds, a french and an english word list. The game will use the french word list, but you can edit the code (line 8) to switch to the english one.
I wrote this this afternoon, so far my score is 31470.

You'll need to download python if you don't have it already.

Netvibes modules

Hey world,

I recently switched from google/ig to Netvibes. This is a great AJAX desktop, far ahead of the others in my opinion.
And as I like to make a desktop my own, I wrote three modules for netvibes:

Daily comics module, inspired from the comics google module by Grimmthething. Presents a list of comics, hover on one and the daily strip appears:

I just noticed that you must grant access to the internet to LSA shell. I noticed that because my java update could notice the new versions but could not get them.
Also, Generic Host Process for Win32 Services doesn't need access.

Here is the latest version of my google module: Personalized Home.
This module is aimed at modifying the look of google personalized homepage.
You can change columns spacing, text padding, link color, link style, title font color and title bar color..

I tried del.icio.us some time ago, but it wasn't very convenient. Having to go to a webpage to get my bookmarks, in a lenghty format, having to go to another webpage to add a bookmark, too much for too little.
Then a friend reminded me of it, at a time when I was working on different computers, with need of online bookmarks.
So I searched for a convenient way to use del.icio.us.
I surely am not the first one to find it, but here it is - firefox only:
First go to your del.icio.us bookmark page, This icon should appear in your status bar, it's for live bookmarks. Click and choose 'Subscribe to feed for xx bookmarks'.
If it doesn't appear, open bookmark manager, click File, New live bookmark, and enter the url of your bookmark page.
Now your del.icio.us bookmarks will appear in a folder together with your regular bookmarks.

Then the 'add bookmark' button.
Del.icio.us proposes a 'remember this' bookmark, which brings you to a web page to enter details about the new bookmark. with a little modification (see below), you can skip the details and just save the bookmark with no tags.
To do this, edit the bookmark, and change this

It seems google web accelerator is availlable for download again.
As I recall, it came up early May 2005, and went down shortly after that.

You should read some comments before using it.

Considering drawbacks previously raised, I will wait for some more reviewing before installing this.

Recently tried clusty, a clustering search engine.
I usually use google, but when I didn't find what I was searching for I tried clusty, and found.
Don't know if this clustering thing is of any use, it enables to categorize your search in a different way... Sort of post-processing.
Just like google, clusty has web, news, images, shopping searches, also has wikipedia, blogs and jobs searches.
Note: Google's blog search is currently beta.

BTW, when looking for alternatives to google, I had a look to mozdex. This is an open source search engine, currently beta. With not much activity during last year. It seems a lot of buzz followed it's opening (in 2004), but nothing followed. I guess it's dead.

Goods:
Skin change show instantly. And there is some choice already.
Fast Rewind and Fast Forward buttons, which go to the more likely previous or next page. We'll see.
Mouse gestures. Well, if you use it.
Voice control. Forward... Forward... Sorry mate, 'was talking to my browser.
Subwindows. Tabs are real internal windows, as in word you can tile your documents, you can tile your webpages. Firefox can't do that. And it seems usefull.
Typing directly in the adress bar triggers a google lucky search - sometimes. Firefox do that - sometimes.
Buttons and text fields have slightly round corners, good looking.

Bads:
The menu bar (File/Edit/View/.../Help) is not considered as a toolbar. Thus you can't place the adress bar up there.
Unfortunatly, this is my favorite layout with Firefox, having a toolbar with menu, few button, adress field, and below that the page tabs.
Then you can't have less than two toolbars (url and tabs), no minimalist AND usable layout then. Except using minimalist skins, such as Breeze Simplified MICRO V4.15.
Popup blocking is quite agressive, even in 'block unwanted' mode, blocking wanted popups.
No extensions, meaning I don't have my stumble upon button. Can't remember if extensions are considered a security breach and won't be allowed, or if it's work in progress. As there is no info on extensions on opera's features page, I suppose this is a no go.
Ads. Opera is now ad-free, good. But you don't have ad blocking functions such as adblock, ads are everywhere again.

Neither good nor bad:
Is it faster ? Well, that's not obvious. Not slower as far as I can notice.
You can call back closed windows. In fact closed windows are moved to a trash, you can then call them back from the trash until you empty the trash. Any use ?

All in All:
Clean and simple. No extensions means no fancy tweaks, it's all about browsing.
I like it. I might stick to firefox for adblock, but I really like it's style.

I tried it years ago when it was a good alternative to IE, and Netscape was old and slow. But when firefox appeared, I switched immediatly.

Wandering on the internet I end more and more often on japanese websites. As I'm very bad at reading question marks, I can either close the page or jump to babelfish translation.
Japanese to English translation, if not perfect, enables to understand the general meaning of a text, better than nothing.
But copying the page url, going to babelfish, pasting, reading, is anoying.

Here comes Translate, a firefox extension which add a Translate function in Tools, and a button in your toolbar.
When on a Japanese page, hit translate and babelhish kicks in with immediate translation.
Linked page are also translated, which is usefull most of the time but can screw up navigation.

I have added three buttons to implement the GooglizeThis! function.
When you click on one of the three buttons, all words longer than 5 letters will be replaced with links to google lucky, wikipedia or google define depending on the button you choosed.
Try it:
- Google lucky: luck
- Google define: def
- Wikipedia: wkpd

The three buttons are placed in the footer of each post, [luck | def | wkpd | ?], they will affect only the current post.

Note: Once applied a replacement can't be undone, reload the page with F5.

I recently discovered greasemonkey, a firefox extension which enables to launch user scripts after a web page is loaded. Having a look at the existing scripts, I remember an old script idea I had some time ago: Googlize this!

When I am writing posts, I often add links to illustrate my ideas, the firefox and greasemonkey links in this post for example. To do that I just do q quick google search, and often copy the first answer as a link.

Thus I wanted a script which would run onload and replace significant words (ie long words) with a google lucky link.
At that time I didn't know about XML DOM javascript functions, which enable to edit the HTML structure of the document, rewriting it all. I discovered that exploring greasemonkey, and wrote two scripts :

The first script is a grease monkey user script, when installed on your firefox (along with greasemonkey) it will Googlize any loaded page - you can include/exclude pages.

To install the greasemonkey script, first install greasemonkey, then right click here and choose "Install User Script..."

The second script is a simple javascript you can include in a page, and activate with a button : try it (working, but quite slow). Get it.

Of course you could change the URL from google's to anything like wikipedia or google define.

All this was tested with firefox only.

Interestingly enough, a non gamer friend is my first source for new interesting games.
After warsow, reviewed here, I tried astronoid.
First, the web site. I haden't seen a webpage resizing itself since... the new century.
After this first surprise of the pre-friendly era of the world wide web, the site opens a new non resizable windows. Argl.
This is an interface, not really a web page not really a game browser, you can create an account and download the game. A bit overdesigned, compared to this.

Download is 80Mo, close borwser, install, start game.
Loading time average, start race.
Throttle up... throttle up... is this my max speed ? Give me my pod racer back !
This is sooo slow.
The principle of the game is: RPG. It means that when starting you have a crapy spaceship, you must run races and earn "fame points" to win new ships and new races. If you don't fall asleep during the first lap, drop your mouse, break your foot and uninstall this slowness of a game.
I was it this state of wind when murki113 started to talk to me using the internal chat stuff.
- murki113: Press backspace to chat
me (thinking): I do not chat with strangers, where the hell is the throotle up ?!
- murki113: Backspace is the key just up the return key
me (thinking): And which is the throotle key ?
- kyrlian: Ok, ok... why is it I'm so slow ?
murki113 explains me this RPG racing concept.

Well, you can like the RPG concept or not, but it was quite a good surprise to have a co-racer explain me the concept of the game, here to earn points and how, the use of antigravity and special keys. If he was just friendly, good wolf to him, if he was a sort of moderator, good idea from the team.

Did I mention Astronoid was in beta test, and therefore free, and will be based on a pay per month business plan ?
The monthly (or 6 monthly if I remember well the discussion I read) fee is not defined yet.

Oh, the website content is in french, but the interface and the game are in english.

Have a look at it, I don't think I'll make it to the end of the beta.

Truveo

Wandering on google news, I read an article (reuters) about a new video search engine called truveo. Pretends to be a step ahead google and yahoo video searches.

Let's try it.

I've entered the search I tried on google a few month ago when their video search was out: Jacques Chirac. The google video search returned a bunch of American talk shows about the war in Iraq and Chirac refusing to go, being a French coward. But absolutely no video featuring Chirac himself.
The problem is google is searching the subtitles, titles, and so on, but when speaking Chirac seldom pronounces his own name. This is the reason why, I suppose, Chirac interviews where nowhere to be seen.

So, here are today results on truveo, google and yahoo.
As you may see, truveo returns videos featuring Chirac, along with a title, date and details, informative and easy to read. The play button opens the source page, reuters video for my first try.
Google returns a documentary about the rainbow warrior. Not really up to date, which is not playable, even if the little play button is active. Clicking it leads to a page with photos every 30 seconds, with the caption "Video is currently not available. More information »". The More information link giving no more information. Well, this is still a google lab.
Yahoo returns a lot of videos, represented by a shot, a file name, size and length. File names are usually unreadable, no date, no title, nothing to assess if the video is of any use - only the shot on which you can see if it's Chirac talking or some news flash where is name is pronounced. Not really white noise, but not really better.

Then I guess this Truveo thing is interesting... If you need to search for videos.

Modding

I've been looking around for W40K-DOW mods, and I found a Dawn of Squirels project.

I say project rather than mod because it seems it was a lot of talk without real modding.
Impressive how several hundreds posts lead to... nothing.

Well, If you are interested they are still looking for a leader, modelers, animators, for... her... people to do the work. Last posts are from mid august this year.

I've done some modding years ago, when I was still a student with time to kill. A mod for quake 3 named... brownie. (I'll put it in binaries as soon as I find it in my archives)
I started fiddling around with the autoaim mod, which was quite difficult to find and didn't work. Have no fear, it's blocked by pure servers. Then I went to modding weapons : bouncing plasma gun (couldn't get rid of the grenade bouncing noise though), lock mode for rockets, heat seeking rockets, and point-of-view rockets, which changed direction according to the owner's viewing direction. You could fire above a wall, then look down and the rocket would go down behind the wall.

This experience was great, it was my first real occasion to play with c++, and to do some code digging, reading pages of code searching for THE place where to put the line of code to do what I wanted.

Reminds me of that photo you found when searching for autoaim : a video camera aimed at a screen, a bunch of electronics and a mouse traped in servomotors.

Skype and ebay

Rumors about skype being bougth by google or yahoo or microsoft or anyone, have turned toward ebay. I can't see how ebay's business could use voip, but it seems they do. I don't think I'll continue using skype if it's owned by ebay.
I'll stick to GAIM, after trying trillian and miranda, I prefered GAIM, for it is free (trillian is not) and extensions work better than with miranda.

MSN, as crappy as it is, does video chat, just as yahoo's, but I really can't have one of these on my desktop.

Also tried google's IM : google talk, but it's just another IM. Good voip though. Keep this one in mind.

Some time ago I told you about .kkrieger, the 96kb game.
As I've updated my hardware, I gave it another try, and it runs ok now.
Well, it's just a demo, and no further version has been published in a year, but it's impressive. In a programming way.
This team also propose .werkkzeug1, a demo (as in scene) editor.

The concept is a bit like povray, meaning it's as much about programming as about design, but with a graphical interface, where you move operators as little blocks. Spent a few hours making a hello world.
Then I ran out of ideas.

If I manage to produce something, I'll put it in binaries.

Open Source FPS

In my constant quest for THE FPS - or at least A fps - to put in the same category as quakes and UTs, I recently tried warsow, an open source fps.
I was not aware of such open source projects, so I searched for others, and I found cube and nexuiz. Both (all three in fact) seem to be in a quite advanced stage of development.
I tried those three.
Cube was recently updated, and new servers weren't listed a few days ago, so I put this one aside. Warsow had very few players a week ago, aside two.
I went to Nexuiz then, which is a based on the quake II engine, very advanced graphics, but quite slow on my computer. On which far cry runs full tilt. I got around 10 to 30 fps with low settings, with some lag in multiplayer, too much for comfy play. I kept it for further tests, but at the end of the line this one is out.

Next: warsow
By then, warsow had had some advertising in germany, a dozen servers where up, full of gamers. This one is also based on the quake II engine, with very simple graphics (reminds me of GL Tron), faster, with dodge style movements, half a dozen weapons (gun, shotgun, rocket, grenades, snipe), very fun and very fast.

But not as fast as Cube.
This one seems to be finished, as the writer has moved to building a next generation engine. This one has it’s own 3d engine, which is currently 2d (as in duke nukem 3d, doesn’t mean it’s all flat, but you can’t have overlapping floors). And it’s incredibly fast. The gameplay is also very, very fast, too fast for me. I tried this one online just tonight for a few minutes, and it wasn’t as fun as warsow – at least for me, but you should give it a try two.

I’ll keep both warsow and cube, looking forward to the next generation of cube, named sauerbraten, available as a beta right now. This one is a full 3D engine in all the three dimensions, with a very interesting approach of map editing.

I didn't mention OS : warsow is win32 or linux, cube is win32 or linux or mac, nexuiz is win32.

As you may have noticed, I haven't post for a while - and this post may, or may not, be a significant improvement.

Quick news:
The French Guy has stopped writing here, and has moved to new pages.
I've change job, house, I'm still a gamer and I still can't find time to write.
It's been more than a year since my last post.
Time rushes.

I was discussing with Aska about blogging, telling him I've got nothing (interesting) to say, this weblog being a written example.
The old memories brought me back to wwimm blog, and to the free writing.
Which is, I must say, an interesting – at least for me – game.

It seems having something to say is not mandatory then.

First of all, seems that the beta is opened to selected guests. Blogger user's are among those.
The gui is fine, clean, well, this is google style after all, nothing new.
As everybody now knows, gmail main feature (or at least difference), is the 1go storing space: you can't delete emails.
This is gonna be weird.
I wonder: what about the business email fine prints 'If you were not the supposed to receive this email, please destroy it and notify the sender' ?
Well, I've registered to my favorite mailing list with this new email, we'll see how it goes using it.

Gmail
Well, played a bit, jsut want to tell you about the 'labels'. You can create labels, which are just sticky words you'll then classify your mails with. The interesting thing is: it's not tree-like as directory are, you can mark a message with several labels (don't know if there is any limit), and the search, filter messages on labels. Seems cool.

NSIS, Nullsoft Scriptable Install System, took me around ten minutes to pack my first installer/uninstaller. Easy to use, scalable, quick, clean, good. And free of course.

Ho, this 'tomorrow' leads me to The day after tomorrow, which itself reminds me of a lot of fuss about this new report on global warming (in french).
I've done some sort of weather-related stuff at uni, what I learned is Gosh, it's f*cking complex, how can I work anything around this problem ? The physics are not really understood, the necessary computation power is huge, and the models just work on very restricted problems. This was 20 month ago.
My point is:
The atmospheric problem is : There is more and more stuff up there, in one hand it's blocking sun rays, but in the other it's keeping the energy inside the atmosphere.
The global problem is : Whatever happens with sun and energy and temperatures, the first modifications will take place in the ocean, which is wide, and unknown, try to find the temperature anywhere in mid-pacific, in the middle of the ocean far from any island.

Btw, a good book (scifi) on tomorrow's problems : Mother of Storms (John Barnes)

Well, I moved to my new flat three month ago, been somehow lazy to order my internet connexion, then they were lazy to plug it in. Now I'm wired again.
Funny how I've lost the ...touch... of it all.
I mean I work in IT, so it took me a few hours to get my accounts running, my old emails plugged back in the brand new mozilla whateverbird, my website on my host, and so on. And now I wonder: what was it all about again ?
I'll have a walk in the mists of the always changing realm of the wild wide web and seek the meaning of it all.

This is not a time to be at work. Still I am. Glad I went out yesterday night, 'cause this friday night seems compromised. Whatever, stuff to do, the progs are running (hell, computing power is exponential, but never reaches the required level), just wait and write some others. And wait.
One good point is:
In winter the sun goes down around 5pm, at that time it's ok to be at work, then you work, and at a certain point you're done, and you go home. It can be 1, 2 or 5 hours, nothing will change outside (I'm in a very quiet place) so you don't tell to yourself 'WTF am I doin' here !' every five seconds. Reached the end, gotta go and check.

PS: Not been ice-skating yet.
PPS: The screen fire is finished, I'll post it sometime.

So I decided to do one myself, but I'm not going to reinvent the wheel, as it would be squarish and I'm lazy. So I've written a winamp visualization component to do the trick. Winamp provides me with a convenient graphic language and a rendering module, I just have to figure out how to do a fire-like screen. I'll post it later, don't have it right there, and it's not finished yet.

Two things:

First: I've decided to shift my position on the internet, refresh some old websites, delete the very old ones, and merge my identities back in the first one.
Which is Kyrlian, my friends call me kyr.
ryk obviously comes from there.
I'm writing different type of things, novels, blog, whatever, so at first I wanted to keep the styles separated, and used different - even if similar - names.
Now I'm quite settled, I now I'll continue to blog, even if not at the same rythm, I'll continue to write, so it's time to get that together.
To be honest, it won't change nothing for you, except this post will be signed kyr. (and all the previous posts as well, as blogger will republish everything with the new nick)

Second: Tonight I was Santa Clauss. At work, I'm the only guy with no children (except for the boss, who wouldn't do Santa Clauss anyway), thus I was the one with the red costume and the backpack full of gifts, coming in the meeting room where the children where eating christmas cake, and shouting HOHOHO, Merry Christmas (which goes 'Joyeux Noel' in the original version). Well, that was a first time.

I opened my blog to tell you about my recent discovery: It's Much More Easy To Write On Paper Than On Keyboard.

But then I remembered that I wanted to find a fire screen saver, so I asked google, and browsed trough the first results. I was quite surprised to see that some companies actually try to sell screen savers, for 10 dollars or so (no link here, I believe in free content, not in the "let's ask for money and see if people buy it" attitude). Then I tried a demo (demo meaning "view a version with our name blinking in the corner, and pay later", not demo as "Let's do something impressive wich will be 10kos and run on my grandmother's amiga at 60fps", but that's not really the point), a burning fire. Well that's what I was looking for, but I guess the code is somewhere on sourceforge(?), and I would need about 4 hours to javac out a windowed fire - add free. I'll let you know. (And if you know someone has already done that, tell me)

Now, this was just a remark, and before I go and browse sourceforge to see if a fire hell project already exists, I'll finish with the first point: "It's Much More Easy To Write On Paper Than On Keyboard."
Let me explain. I write stuff like small novels, poems, which are published somewhere on the internet - in French - and not signed ryk, but if you search, you'll find. Whatever, the thing is I usually write on paper, mainly when not at home, and then type back on my notepad.
Some time ago I wanted to write a novel, I hadn't any paper ready, so I tried to start and thing about the story line, find the main character, the plot, the landscape, to draw a global picture. I couldn't. I tried with this method for two weeks, but as soon as I tried to think about the novel, my mind wandered to whatever other subject of immediate concern, and so long for the storyboard. So after a while, I took my notepad (the paper kind), a pen, and waited for five seconds, trying to remember what name I had choosen. Ten minutes later I had my first chapter. (I do small chapters).
I still don't know what the end will be, but I guess my pen will decide along the lines.

I feel like blogging tonight.
But I don't have any particular subject in mind, so it'll be a bit confused until I grasp a line.
Well, I have my first christmas gift ready. The thing is It's mine. I really must go shopping this weekend. I always go the 'but last' weekend for my christmas shopping, never could get myself to do it earlier.
So, my gift to myselft is a toaster. The English kind, wallace & gromit kind, the kind you don't find in France. Thanks to TBoB, who lives oversea, I'll have one when taking my first breakfeast in my new home.

I didn't give any news about my finally successfull search for an apartment, I found a nice studio near Alesia metro station, south of Paris, I shall move in during christmas holidays, which will start december 20th. You'll be welcome home.

This being done, I got to find new objectives for next year. Or maybe I'll just let me live for a while, just to try the taste of time passing by.

Well, I've been monitoring the news these last days, but nothing extraordinary is happening in december, malls are packed with givers and gifts, ads are dressed in red and white and singing 'HoHoHo', the cold is as cold as usual, the global warming seems to have stopped during winter.

Lazy day today. Raining, cloudy. Gone through le jardin du luxembourg around noon, I was alone, rain playing in the trees, cold wind. Silence.

Two hours later
Well, that was a good concert. Small scene, we arrived at the middle of the concert, for the band we came for, we just saw the end of the previous performance and a small newscast on some anti-war march. (A far-left politician was saying "Let's not start what will be a bloody war, let's show this is not what the people want". Three month later, the war is over, it's still a bloody mess.)
Then the FatalsPicards, good songs, good scene play, feels like being home, or at a friend's party, with a local band playing for a birthday. Cosy.
Now I'll go and have some sleep, tomorrow is another work day.

Funny to switch from English to French and back (most of the film beeing in English). The movie itself is OK, reminded me of Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, but more fuzzy, less fun, guess they are better musicians than actors. As I write that, I tell myself "If it wasn't you saying it, you'd say it's a jerkish remark". I guess the voice in my head is right. The 1vs1 between Renaud and Hallyday was good. Guess who won.

Just changed my comment system from KlinkFamily's blogout to Haloscan's. The second one is simpler, quicker. It's also more widely used, that could become a problem sometimes, but we'll deal with it then.

Well, yesterday was as bad as monday, but today was good. Once again, when you are tired nothing goes well. I'm ready for next weekend now.
So here are the news (get ready, it might be long)
I'll start with last weekend, for I'm too lazy to recall what happened before, and only a few people would bother anyway.
So, last weekend I went to a friend's, in Nancy. The main object of the trip, apart from the trip itself (always good to leave from hometown from time to time), was a jazz concert, part of the Nancy Jazz Pulsations program, a five hours show, featuring (I got to google that to get the right spellin) Késiah Jones. That was good. The night was long, we went to a 24h boulangerie twice in the night, a gay bar (why the hell ?), and walked all around the city just 'cause this as***le wouldn't remeber where we were heading for more than 30 seconds.
Sunday was lazy, good meal, good wine, back to Paris.
Monday and thursday were no good, too much work, tired from the weekend, hell.
As I said up, today was better, sunny, I had slept, all the stuff I had to do sundely seemed easier (not easy yet, but not as impossible as before), so I'm in a better mood today.

That was for the backlog, now let me just spend a few lines on a news I saw in wired (yeah, reading the news on a palm during the morning bus transfer is a good way to start the day), Lego is hunting a new 'Lego Master Builder'. Each and every boy know what a lego is, a lot of them (us) have spend some years playing with those bricks, building whatever we pleased, beeing god (yellow plastic flavor). Now Lego is opening one of the most wanted job on earth: Lego God. Well, my lego passion is gone now, but it seems a lot of people are ready for the fight, one of them will play forever after.
From my point of view, Lego has become more and more commercial, lauching series of whatever trendy, not really related to constructing worlds anymore, more like assembling simple toys to play with instead of directly buying them. I guess I'm not a child anymore.

HTML - Fractal complexity

Hello World.
I've been coding /fighting/ the template of the small blog I use for the links (left bottom corner of your screen - hopefully) for several hours.
I didn't want to have the standard scroll bar, but some arrows, couldn't make them out of the frame as you can't perform javascript 'scrollBy' on a page placed on a different host (whateverwimm is the main page, wwimm-links is the links page). I still did want some fix arrows, not the up/down links I had before on the date line. So here we go for some javascript quick learning. I'm a fast learner (for coding and whatever mathematical stuff (yeah right)), so I quickly wrote a small code on a test page to do the nice scrolling of the page, the arrows staying at the top. Cut 'n Paste, didn't work. After hours, I figured that the DOCTYPE at the very begining of the template was screwing everything, as (I suppose) my code was not coherent with the doctype. Kill that. Now it works.
That is something like a Basic Rule in computer programming: when you have no idea why it doesn't work, you can be sure it's not coming from what you just wrote but from another detail, unnoticed before and quickly forgotten, hidden in some (remote) part of your (huge) code.
That leads to the title: Fractal complexity: basic HTML is simple and quick, anybody can write a HelloWorld page, then you feel confident and embrace the whole complexity of the Internet. And you don't sleep anymore. Beware.

Plucker provides a basic list, including /., wired and such, plus some news as CNN. I'm quite sure reuters would have such a handheld formated section, the thing is WHERE THE F*CK IS IT !?

I'm almost done, just to finish: I've seen The Core this afternoon. Well. That film is no good. They tried to remake armageddon, twisting the scenario a bit so nobody would guess. A forgotten scientist creates a new device to melt rocks, together with the super-steel to build the incredible machine, right when needed by the American Army.
One funny thing: the rat (yeah, the super hacker - the actor is the little guy in road trip) plays a tune using a chewing gum package (well, here my english is failing) to unlock a phone (Now you've got interurban calls gratis, for life.) This is just like the Tgirl talking with a modem in T3.
I was going to see an armageddon like, I saw a... bad remake of... can't find something quite as plotless.

About this study I mentionned earlier(Can you raed tihs?), showing that you can read scrambled words, as long as first and last letters are well placed... Found a trace on slashdot, and then to the source... which is not any university. (BTW, sometimes it is about cambridge uni and sometimes just an english uni. Anyway, here is the trace:

It's been a while - my home computer was down for a week, and a lot of work at work, no time for blogging there - here are the news:
- still havent find my apartment, still searching
- summer is still here, despite what meteorologists try to make us believe
- ITs have finaly managed to produce low price PCs with easy to install stuff, everything is up an running minutes /hours/ after you came home with a bunch of boxes. (given I already had the internet wired)
I've found a BlogStockMarket, will have a look at that later (see link on right side), my firebird seems a bit unstable, I've been kicked twice when browsing this afternoon.

It's quite funny to see the internet, which has grown wildly unoticed from any commercial vamp during the last ten (twenty) years, now poluted by people wanting to own that or that. I'm not really concerned by the linux/sco debate nor this RIAA affairs as I'm in europe (I do hope the frontwave will be stoped inside the mighty US of A and we won't have to bother), but I'm contemplating all that movement, debates, subpoenas and noise, wondering if I should trow my computer away and get back to ink and paper.

I'm lucky today.
I take two buses to go to work, and to more to come back, I had three of them as soon as I walked by the bus stop,
back home the lift was at ground floor, and I had emails from distant friends in the box.
If I was in gambling I would. I'm not.
An article about a cambridge university study showing that you can write all wrong and still be read spread today, I'm searching for a reliable source...
And I have no comment about my digital camera problem... I think I'll pick the olympus, as frenchy has slightly the same one and I know it is nice.
By the way, I browsed through the columns of the washington post today, find it quite interesting, good overviews.
By another way, you may have (or not) noticed that I don't use my googler anymore. Well, that's not because I'm grown up and have started to use hyperlinks with more care, it's just because my computer is much more stable since the weather is cooler and I don't have to save when writing, so I write directly in blogger. I might write a pluggin for mozilla to instantly create the link to the google search... Yeah, sounds great!... does it? Well, if you have mozilla, you can select a word, right clic, and clic 'web search for "selected" ', so it would be for ie-users. Still lot of people.
Oh, I'm still looking for an apartement in paris - to be honest I wasn't very efficient this summer - if you have anything, do not hesitate, post a comment or mail me. My mail is somewhere on this page, left side.

Hello,
I've been playing with the design and code of the blog, the content was left out for some days.
Well, I was in provins this weekend, nice and sunny, a nice way to finish my holidays. Tomorrow I'll be back to work.
Anyway, I'm planing to buy a digital camera, as I'm in France my choice is different from the one you can have overseas I guess, my short list contains
Olympus Camedia C-220 Zoom and Fujifilm Finepix A204, from all those, given that I don't want to spend more than 200€. The olympus is smaller, the fujifilm has an optic zoom, the price difference is not much. I'm hesitating. If anyone has any of those, or something else, tell me what you think.

Clubbing

Clubbing. At the batofar. Was the birthday of a friend, that's easy to remember, 11/09. Had a beer and a piece of cake in a bar near hotel de ville, then to the batofar, a club on a péniche (barge), goooood music. All night.
We left around 5am, went all the way back to St Michel (that was a walk).
Had a hot chocolate in a 24h café, le café du départ, and off to sleep.
I find it fun to take the first metro, when people go to work, still half sleeping, and you go to sleep, half sleeping to, just perfect oposite.
Now it's hard to wake up.

Seriously, patch your windows, get linux, get some firewall and/or antivirus, watch your mails. Ho, get rid of outlook, there is a lot of alternatives.
Ok, let's me show you. The softs I use are mostly free for non commercial use, refer to the corresponding license
As a firewall I use kerio, simple and effective, you can have a look at ZoneAlarm if you prefer. I don't.
As a Antivirus, got Antivir, seems ok, but I've had it for only few days.
Next mailer and browser, well, get mozilla. Mozilla firebird is for browsing, mozilla thunderbird for mailing if I remember well.
You might want something for your instant messages, Trillian is ok. (not totally free though, the pro version is sold).
With that you'll be wired AND secure. Well, do not execute programs you receive in emails, they are crap. Your friends never send you .exe, .pif or .scr, do they ?
Viruses are a disease, takes down the net. Some should do their work better, some should do something else of their free time.
Get responsible, do not click blindly.

So summer is starting to fall. Ohoh .
And what did i learn in summer? I learnt that medias can convince us that a man can be responsible of weather and that this bad guy is actually the prime minister Jean Pierre Raffarin. I definitly learnt that heat is funcking annoying especially when you are in the subway or even outside. With the murder of Marie Trintignant and the little boy Nicolas, i learnt that i could have no mercy for killers. I learnt that some people can be really cruel without taking notice of it. I learnt i truly don't understand life. I learnt that it could be a good thing. I learnt that my mom is the best mom ever. I learnt that i could be deeply depressed and very happy (in this order) in the same day.
I'm sure i have learnt many other things.

In fall, i think i won't have time to be bored with my removal. I also have a huge project. Hope i will finish in time.

People.
The world is full of people. I think I didn't notice before. I mean, I've got friends, relatives, colleagues, I know, let's say, a hundred people, two hundred?
And I've got a computer, linked to the internet, swarming with people. Since I've started this blog, along with Frenchy, I'm much more sensitive to this personal aspect of the internet.
The other day I was playing with winamp2 and the shoutcast TVs, I came across two webcams, one was a guy, chating on IRC, webcam online, just idle chat, but you can see one of the guys. Funny. Not useful at all, but fun. For a little while. The other one was a girl, who is running a blog, a small website, and has this cam online, sometimes. Well, I think running a blog is really personal, meaning that it is mainly for the author, except if you are a celebrity in real life nobody (but your friends) will regularly come to your blog. So what of a webcam? Well, maybe a bunch of random wandering guys (and girls, for the internet doesn't care of your sex) will come across, but that's just... noise.
This was an example - lengthy - of some personal interest that will remain (my point of view) personal.
On the other hand I came across (to be honest I followed a link from webcam-girl-website) a photoblog. Well a photo website, then from link to link I arrived to photoblogs.org, where I learned what is a photoblog. And ther I found a lot of websites, a lot of pictures and... portraits. auto-portraits. How come people always want to see themselves on the net!? Ok, I am this type of person, but... hell.
So, today I learned there is a bunch of people out there, mostly on other continents, I knew that already, 've been at school, years ago. I learned that everybody wants to say something to the mic', and that internet is the place to do that. 'cause you can talk, even if nobody cares to listen! (And the only thing you gotta do is remove your xiti counter not to be aware of that). I'm too young to be blind, I'll keep this counter.

With the beatles

This has been a time a great trouble.
Actually not really. What did those last days bring me? Not many things but enough happiness.
I had this thought : sometimes unhappy people are thinking about the time they were happy but didn't feel it. So did I.
And i didn't really find a period of time where i should have been happy. Does this mean that i never had been happy? Maybe.
But i had better think that i'am currently happy !

Well Okay, i spent last weekend at home and met my friends there. I know some of them since little childhood.
But i was introduce to some other girls&boys. i might said I did have some great times and spent a lot of money.
Listened to Guitar. Tasted again Smirnof ice saturday night. Quite refreshing. But it didn't help me to stay at the party because some people had to leave. Had better sleeping?

Also Strange feelings in my head. Stranges conversations. Strange acts.
And today i'm working, waiting for a phone call that now may never come. Should i call again?

Did you know that? Of course you didn’t, you don’t know what I’m talking about even now I’ve almost given you the secret I just found.
Okay, it’s not big secret, please don’t say I’m a lamer, it would be nasty of you.
Winamp2 is better than winamp3.
Hooked? good, that was the goal. Well, winamp3 is shiny, you can have funny skins looking like red or yellow xboxs, nice buttons and all. The thing is it needs almost five seconds to load on my average one year old computer AND it doesn’t do anything more than any dosamp you can run on your toaster. Here you are for nasty words against the cream of new technologies. You’re welcome. As I said some time ago, I am, along with half of the kids/guys/young executives of my age, born with the tidal wave of new techs. Which are not new techs since internet is called Internet, has grown up and gone wild. - Wait, this is a French song they have on... well, I don’t know which radio I’m listening to. That is one of the side effects of the internet. - So, I was saying that winamp3 is just a shining armor around empty smoke, whereas winamp2 hasn’t evolved GRAPHICALLY for several (five?) years, but the community (the geeks working for free everywhere around you, including me(you?), sometimes) has embraced this free - and working - technology to play with it and has launched a bunch of projects, tools, plugins, ideas, flying saucepans, which were usefull or not, were selected buy time like the species were (yeah, obviously darwin WAS right), and now I can watch TV on my computer, with average quality sound, while I’m taping this post.
That’s luxury. Technology is about luxury, isn’t it? That might be the subject of my next post. For now, I’m off grid. Good night world.

Back on the tracks.
I feel like a little boy who broke his nice little red car he had for Christmas, and fixed it. Well, I've been to the Chinese quarter, were you can find cheap computer pieces here in Paris, back home, drop the burnt stuff, replace, run, stop, change some wiring, start again, ok, let's check my mails.
I'll be kind with my little red car now.
How, by the way, a friend of mine showed up for my birthday. I knew she would, but felt happy she did. Good, maybe I'll let her know I'm writing my mind around here.
On the way back from the silicon dealers (hehe, what a name), a guy entered the metro with a green whatever, something like [just a sec, it just struck me I was writing directly in my browser, without saving, last time I did that, Murphy had me.] Ok, safe in my favourite txt editor. Which is not word for word suxx. That IS basic anti-ms-xpression.
Hehe, saving my text I saved it as .c, now all the fors are blue and my friend is red. Striking hu!? Hum. Where was I?
Oh yeah, the palm-tree-guy, so he apologised to people around for getting in with his own personal forest, someone said something like "hey, it's cool having trees in the metro, let's talk to RATP!". The sun was coming through the tree (I'm lacking vocabulary here), closed my eyes, felt almost on the Spanish shore, feeling the hot sand in my shoes. The he left the metro, taking my dream away to his balcony. I took my stuff home and wired and so, and get grided again (Is that a real word? Gridlinked is not either, is it? Let's say linked then). And now I'm gonna browse the net and have some dinner.

I first want to thanks everybody for making me feel younger for my birthday. Not that I'm old.
For the second time in a short while, I've been told that my writing is worth reading, feels good, I think I already gave the link. Thanks again to the GoodWolf for he cares enough to be my internet beacon. My home computer has been down for some days, I'm not ubiquitous anymore. That remembers me of an article where the author was analyzing that a wireless google access would make one nearer to God, seeing everything, knowing everything. Well, my experience is that you indeed reach a higher degree of awareness when wired, but you are blind when disconnected. You can only see what's near you, what you can hear on the national radio and TV channels, some standard world news if you are lucky enough to have cable-TV. You're an earthling again. Not that it's bad, mind me, even if my living is based on silicon-engraved technologies I still spend most of my time off the matrix. But I'm bound to my daily dive through the net. Maybe I should use this opportunity to write something. The thing is I usually write directly on my computer. Well , this is it . My idea was : If I search each word in google and then post the first link , it's dumb and easy , why not have some script doing it for me ? Let's go . So I did it using word macros , quick and crap . It works . The thing is it's the 'Feeling lucky' links which is opened , no more human selection . That is bad . Maybe I'll code an editor in which you have a side -window doing google search on any selected word , and then you pick one and the link is built . Yeah , I'll think about that . It's been some time since my last post. Well, it's summer time, everything goes slower, days are longer but we don't do much more, time is passing by with the sound of hot air slowly moving around. I was half asleep when I woke up to write this. Don't really know why. Sometimes you just want to write, you can feel the urge to say something, tell something to someone, but you don't know what or whom or why. So you write a poem to someone you don't know and call her your muse or you open your blog and write what you think, even if nobody cares. I do. Nobody cares. Did I write that earlier ? I think so. I'll check, maybe is just a loophole in my brain, this feeling called déjà vu, a glitch in the matrix.

Some times ago I started linking more and more stuff I say, just like frenchy did, at the beginning I linked only content I talked about, now I google all the keywords and pick a link, for it is fun, relevant, irrelevant, awkward, whatever. Got an idea. I'll do that tomorrow, now I gotta get some sleep. I'll let you know what this was, later.

Marie Trintignant has died today and it is a very sad news to me. She was 41. She didn't survive the "fight" she had with Bertrand Cantat, the well known singer from band Noir Desir.
She has played in three movies that i truly love : cible emouvante, les apprentis and des nouvelles du bon dieu.

Good evening world.
I'm listening to the music, end of Equilibrium, which I just saw. Well, the music is good, the movie was good two. It reminded me a lot of Matrix, that doesn't surprise me: the first time I saw the ads, I though it was matrix3 already. The scenario is good, a bit like gattaca's, a bit more polish would have been good, the historical reference to the third reich is so obvious it's ridiculous. The images are nice, clean, a hyper-dynamic cam-play such as matrix's would have been perfect. These are my two critics, the scenario is very good, lot of little surprises now and then, punchy fights. At the end of the line, it's very good, go and see it.
I think this will be all for today, as tomorrow will be rainy I might come again.

Hello there. Have you ever played Armagetron ? It's a light-cycle race, as in the Walt-Disney movie. Disney is to release a game after the movie, Tron 2.0, I've played the demo and, well, would have been a good try back in 82, to catch the wave of the movie. Whatever, go and download Armagetron, it's a good game, a bit addictive, if you're anything near a gamer, give it a try.
